Housekeeping and Back Pain

When one is cleaning the house, a lot of bending and twisting are often involved. This normally causes back pain to the housekeeper. So how is backaches prevented?

1. When you lift heavy things around the house, bend at your knees and not at your waist. Use your legs to lower you down to pick up the stuff and maintain an upright position on your upper body. This way you can avoid hurting your back or your spine.

2. Do not stay in one position for a long time. If you are gardening and have been bending your body a lot, it is advisable for you to get up and stretch once in a while to break the stress you are putting on your back. Walk around or take a break. Through this, your muscles will be able to relax and will not cause you to suffer from any back pain.

3. Divide big chores into smaller segments and take your time while getting them done. For instance, instead of carrying two pails full of water to clean up the floors, fetch only one pail and get the other one after. Do the same thing with garbage. No matter how filthy trash is, do not try to collectively bring it to the bin.

4. Use your arms when sweeping the floor or dusting. If you need to get down to the floor, do not bend your back. Bend on your knees instead and then make full use of your arms to clean the floor. If you cannot reach some areas, use a rod and attach a cloth or rug to it and use that for hard-to-reach areas.
